OMV (Pakistan) began its research efforts in the Thar Desert, District Sukkur, in 1991. In 1993, it made its first significant discovery there—a natural gas reservoir known as “Miano.” Continued efforts led to the 1998 discovery of the Sawan gas field in district Khairpur, which is currently the fourth-largest gas producer.
In terms of operating quantities, OMV is the largest foreign natural gas producer in Pakistan. OMV is currently in charge of operating more than 100,000 boe/d, or about 15% of Pakistan’s natural gas demand, as the operator of the Sawan and Miano gas fields as well as the Kadanwari processing facilities. The company has made significant financial contributions to the government coffers with investments totaling USD 957 million to date. OMV’s presence in Pakistan and its consistent expansion since 1990 serve as a source of assurance for potential new foreign investors.
